Fair play. I would be very interested in having a look at what is involved. It may be beyond my abilities as my experience in opening head units is limited to removing coins from them. Is there a kit of components needed available?
Thank you. It is less than straight forward to say the least. Good to know what is involved. Now all I need to do is decide if I am willing to risk head unit and give it a go. Could always go back to CDC40 and pair that to CID if worst happens.
To make your life much easier
Get low melt solder paste - i mean really paste look for something at 140deg C
Hot air station - can be hot air gun but be carefull setting temp and do not blow smd components away (but should be fine if use paste which melts at low deg C)
Apply paste where needed but do not add too much just litle bit
Stick smd parts on solder paste make sure whats needed is in correct position like tda chip and big caps
And than apply heat with air station or whichever method you preffer
Good advice. Cheers. It would not have occurred to me to get low melting point solder. Instructions in link are very detailed and clear. Reckon I will give it a go once I gather all that is needed. Is there a recommended seller of components required?
Rs components, digikey if for quality products but sometimes they are bit expensive as you must buy some items in lots.
Tda chip you will find on ebay
Got the components needed and gave this a go. After two hours and possibly the ugliest bit of soldering witnessed by man I had it back together. I was only partially successful though. I only have sound from left speakers when I select AUX-In. Rechecked wires from jack to back of unit in the hope problem was there but they are fine.
I think I bit off more than I could chew taking this on myself. I did not realise components were so miniscule and added to a slight shake in my hands developing half way through I was relieved to have it back together and working at all. That said I reckon I will have to recheck / resolder all of components again to be sure.
Thanks again for advice.
James.
Use a mini gas pencil torch to re-flow the solder joints. Easier than an iron.
