If it happened in all gears, I would suggest thrust bearing.
But only making the noise in 3rd and4th, maybe suggests a gearbox problem.

My guess would be the crank sensor or the cam sensor, or maybe both.
But out that is just a guess.

Just changed the rear disc and pads on my Vectra. Went for the genuine option.
Changed the the front discs and pads last year. Yep, genuine again...

That sounds like the problem then, if the bleed screws are seized then you will not be able to remove the air from the system...
